Avery Anderson

"Raised in Florida, and relocating to Maine after high school, I have had the opportunity as a self taught artist to develop a personal style of expression through my glass work. Both of my parents were involved in the arts and were the owners of three different galleries. It was through this exposure my love for glass evolved. After raising a family, I was finally able to pursue this love on a full-time basis. I enrolled in numerous art and design courses, and have studied various glass techniques over the past 16 years. I also attended Camp Colton in Oregon, a well known school that specialized in kiln techniques for glass, and studied fusing under Boyce Lundstrom. This resulted in my obsession with 'warm' glass. My work can be found from coast to coast, in galleries and as installations in private homes. It has appeared in numerous juried competitions and exhibitions.
From early adolescence, one of my passions has been a deep love for animals and nature. Over the years, this love has escalated. I've found myself supporting a variety of national wildlife projects and working with local wildlife professionals on various programs. It seems only natural that I devote my life's work to this theme. Through my glass, I focus on individual animals. I explore the relationship between these animals and their human counterparts down through the ages. I'm especially drawn to the spiritual connection. Each design is a narrative through imagery. I try to capture the essence of each species while offering tribute to the Earth's wildlife in general.
My chosen medium and passion is glass. I work in almost all aspects of it but find my obsession to be 'fusing.' I am constantly pushing the edge for more complex and creative work in this medium. Techniques such as sandblasting, airbrushing, silk-screening and working with precious metals and luster's are also incorporated in my pieces. Fusing is a challenging process technically and aesthetically, but one that brings me daily joy and great fulfillment.
I believe man can learn much from the animal world if he is perceptive. By studying animals in their natural environments, and opening our minds to their lessons on how to live, we can become more connected with the Earth and gain a better understanding of our own journeys here. It is my desire to prompt a positive emotional response from the viewer. I try to create beautiful glass with a subtle message-to appreciate nature, and to live in harmony with the Earth and all of her life."
